The first patient at Casey House was delivered by a team of medics in hazmat suits, upon arrival he was welcomed with a warm embrace by Casey House staff, the first time he had been touched in months. Host Victoria Emslie is joined by Joanne Simons, CEO of Casey House, a specialty hospital in Toronto and Canada’s first and only hospital for people living with HIV/AIDS.
They discuss how Casey House has evolved from its beginnings as a hospice during the AIDS epidemic to the multidisciplinary hospital it is today. She also provides some insight on the impact of the stigma around HIV, what her team has done and continues to do to change that narrative and what we can all do to make our world more inclusive.
Joanne Simons is the CEO of Casey House. Prior to joining Casey House, Joanne has held leadership positions at the Arthritis Society, Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and CauseForce.
As a devoted advocate of healthy communities, Joanne’s first passion is the not-for-profit sector and she has been consistently recognized as a leader and innovator. She brings 20 years of experience in stakeholder engagement, clinical leadership, revenue development, marketing and communications. Joanne has served on a number of not-for-profit board of directors including Hazel Burns Hospice, The Redwood Shelter and Health Partners.
