Last month, we eagerly gathered at The Royal Conservatory of Music for our third annual Women’s LEAD event in Toronto, aiming to support, build, and connect our community. The energy was dynamic, and it surged even more after our panelists spoke. Our opening speaker, LaQuita Cleare, emphasized the power of storytelling as the most effective way to communicate. Inspired by her words, everyone was excited to share stories and takeaways with each other.
In a fast-paced world with ever-increasing demands, our co-chair, Danielle Skipp, emphasized the importance of being intentional about our well-being, knowledge, and community, and with intentionality, it can be transformative. Focusing on well-being includes physical health and financial independence, ensuring stability to thrive. Prioritizing knowledge fosters confidence and empowerment, equipping us to navigate life's challenges. Nurturing a sense of community involves engaging with others and forming connections that lead to opportunities and a richer life. By fostering these elements, we construct an enriching and fulfilling life. This holistic approach encourages mindful choices that enhance our quality of life, creating a foundation for lasting happiness and success.
Our expert moderator, Paulina Cameron, seamlessly guided the conversations amongst our panelists, sharing her own experiences as she transitioned from being the former CEO of The Forum to her current role as CCO of Flytographer. She shared her passion for equity and innovation, enriching the dialogue with her insights.
In a world teeming with expectations and predefined paths, the act of taking a leap—a bold, often uncertain step into the unknown—can be both terrifying and liberating. For many women, life is a series of pivots, each turn a testament to resilience and courage. One of our panelists, Diana Matheson shared the idea that "if not you, then who; and if not now, then when?" which echoes the urgency and necessity of self-advocacy and personal growth.
The Power of the Leap
LaQuita was passionate that taking a leap is an act of faith, not just in the universe, but fundamentally in oneself. When you decide to leap, you're betting on your potential and trusting that the safety net will appear, woven by your perseverance, skills, and community. This leap might be a career change, starting a new venture, or even a personal transformation.
For women, these leaps often come with additional layers of complexity—balancing family, societal expectations, and sometimes battling the internalized voices of doubt. Yet, history is replete with examples of women who took those leaps and soared.
Embracing Pivots
Pivots are the shifts we make when life demands flexibility. They are not signs of failure but of evolution.
Consider the many women who have left corporate jobs to start their own thriving businesses. For example, Safoura Zahedi became a newly minted entrepreneur just three months ago, demonstrating that such pivots require not just the willingness to leap but also the resolve to see the leap through. Dimitra Davidson echoed this sentiment, sharing that as an entrepreneur, you inherently know when it's time to take that pivotal step in your career. While it can be nerve-racking, she emphasized the importance of finding someone to share that journey with.
While not an entrepreneur, Meghan Roach used the example of Robert Frost's "The Road Not Taken" by choosing the less travelled path, a choice that "has made all the difference" in her journey to becoming the CEO of Roots. She resonated with many of us by addressing the struggle for perfection, emphasizing that "sometimes you have to pick the least worst decision and be okay with it." Her message that it's okay not to have all the answers struck a chord. Meghan also addressed the common question about being in male-dominated industries, shifting the narrative by embracing her unique position when speaking at events or panels dominated by male CEOs. She encouraged us to use these moments to stand out and speak with conviction, as we already have everyone's attention. The words we tell ourselves matter and can transform our perspective.
The Importance of Storytelling
Storytelling is a powerful tool in the journey of taking leaps and making pivots. By sharing our stories, we create a tapestry of experiences that others can learn from and find inspiration in. Each narrative becomes a beacon of hope, showing that the road less travelled, though fraught with challenges, leads to unique and rewarding destinations.
When women share their stories, they dismantle the societal norms that often dictate who they should be. They use their voices to challenge stereotypes, break barriers, and empower others to do the same. In a world that sometimes tries to silence or shape us, storytelling becomes an act of rebellion and self-assertion.
The Role of Community
No leap is taken in isolation. The role of community in these journeys cannot be overstated. A supportive network provides the encouragement and resources needed to take that first step and continue along the path. Whether it's family, friends, professional networks, or online communities, the collective strength of these groups forms the safety net that catches us when we falter.
Communities also amplify our stories, spreading the message that it is possible to defy expectations and succeed on our terms. They remind us that while the road less taken may be daunting, we do not walk it alone.
Using Your Voice
"If not you, then who; and if not now, then when?" Diana shared that this was like a call to action to serve as a reminder that we each have the power and responsibility to shape our destinies. Using your voice means advocating for yourself, but it also means speaking up for others, sharing knowledge, and fostering a culture of mutual support. It suggests that if you don't take on a task or responsibility, it might not get done, and if you don't do it now, the opportunity might be lost which highlights the importance of seizing the moment and taking initiative.
Every woman's story is unique, but the themes of courage, resilience, and transformation are universal. By using your voice to share your journey, you not only validate your experiences but also inspire others to find their paths.
Taking a leap, embracing pivots, and sharing your story are acts of profound bravery. They signify a commitment to living authentically and making choices that honour your true self. In doing so, you pave the way for others to follow, creating a ripple effect of empowerment and change. Remember, the world awaits your unique story only you can tell.
