Every day, not just on IWD, it is vital that we stay committed to keeping important discussions alive. By continually raising awareness and using our voices for good, we can inspire others and drive forward meaningful change. Life and career journeys are not easy, but by supporting the future generation and those who come after us, we are actively contributing to shaping a better society for all.

As a parent, my daughter serves as a constant source of inspiration, driving me to advocate for a future where young girls everywhere can thrive in a world free from gender and ethnic barriers. Conversely, my son reminds me of the pivotal role allyship plays in creating such a world. Parenthood has prompted me to carefully consider the behaviours I model for my children, knowing that they learn most by observation. This principle also extends to the business world and the world of women’s empowerment – where leading by example is paramount.

As women, we stand on the shoulders of those who came before us – trailblazers who fought tirelessly and paved the way for our success. It is now our turn to carry the torch forward and empower the next generation of women to reach even greater heights. Our role is to help others achieve success beyond what they thought possible, reaching back and paying it forward to carve a path for future generations. Through mentorship, advocacy, and sponsorship, we empower young women and girls to follow suit, creating a ripple effect for generations. Our efforts today are preparing the next generation to surpass us in every conceivable way, ensuring a future where discussions about equity and equality are no longer necessary. It is through our collective action that we normalize a world where young girls and women are equitable and pave the way for a brighter, more inclusive future. When women support one another, incredible things happen.

Recently, I had the privilege of joining my colleague Jada Fleur-de-Lys, and Sofia Lopez, an intern at PenderFund and UBC student, to participate in the Soroptimist Surrey/Delta Chapter’s Dream It! Be It! Conference. This event, organized by Soroptimist, a global volunteer organization, aims to provide women and girls with the education and training they need to achieve economic empowerment. Our workshop focused on financial literacy, emphasizing the profound impact that knowledge, education, and confidence can have on young girls as they navigate their futures.

More than just teaching financial skills, our workshop served as an opportunity to showcase BIPOC women role models in the financial services sector. We believe that representation matters – seeing women who look like them succeeding in their careers can inspire young girls to dream big and pursue their goals with confidence. As the saying goes, “You have to see it to be it”. By sharing our experiences and expertise, we hope to empower the next generation to reach their full potential and make a difference in the world.

Building confidence and financial literacy among young girls is essential for their personal and financial development and for promoting gender equity and economic empowerment. By investing in their financial education and fostering their confidence in managing money, we empower them to shape their futures and contribute to a more prosperous society.

Knowledge leads to power and power leads to engagement, and it is this engagement piece that empowers them to dream big and pursue their goals with confidence. Here are some of the important factors:

  1. Empowerment: Financial literacy education equips girls with the knowledge and skills to manage their finances independently. As they learn about budgeting, saving, investing, and managing debt, they gain a sense of control over their financial future. This empowerment fosters confidence, encouraging girls to take charge of their lives and pursue their aspirations with determination.
  2. Goal Setting: Understanding financial concepts enables girls to set realistic and achievable goals for themselves. By envisioning their future and creating financial roadmaps to get there, girls develop a sense of purpose and direction, bolstering their confidence in their ability to succeed.
  3. Risk-Taking: Financial literacy education teaches girls about risk management and the importance of making informed decisions. As they learn to assess risks and weigh potential rewards, they become more comfortable stepping outside their comfort zone and pursuing opportunities that align with their aspirations. This willingness to take calculated risks fosters resilience and adaptability, enhancing their confidence to navigate challenges and pursue their dreams fearlessly.
  4. Career Advancement: Financial literacy can impact career choices and advancement opportunities. When young girls understand the importance of financial planning and investing, they are better positioned to pursue higher education, negotiate salaries, and build wealth over time.
  5. Financial Independence: By instilling financial literacy skills in girls from a young age, we empower them to achieve financial independence and break free from traditional gender roles and stereotypes. When girls have the knowledge and confidence to manage their finances effectively, they are less likely to be reliant on others for financial support. This independence fosters a sense of autonomy and self-reliance, empowering girls to pursue their passions and aspirations on their terms.
  6. Long-term Financial Well-Being: Developing financial literacy skills at a young age sets the foundation for long-term financial well-being. Young girls who are confident in managing their finances are more likely to build wealth, achieve financial security, and enjoy a higher quality of life as adults.

Teaching young girls about financial literacy is more than just about money – it’s about lifting them up with confidence to use their voice as their superpower, to take control of their future, to dream big, and create a more equitable and inclusive world for themselves and all the little girls who follow. Together, let’s continue to champion the cause of female empowerment and create a world where every woman and girl has the opportunity to shine brightly and make a difference.
