"When I realized my peers were enthusiastic about lab work after college (while I couldn't wait to leave!), I dropped my science classes and transitioned to Applied Arts for Interior Design. It offered the perfect fusion of creativity and hands-on engagement," Amber recalled.
Although initially drawn to interior design for its aesthetic allure and creative possibilities, Amber soon discovered a deeper side of her passion. Collaborating with skilled tradespeople and finding a balance between ideas and practical construction became the heart of her journey. "I love coming up with ideas and figuring out how to bring them to life," she added.
Amber acknowledges the unique challenges of being a woman in an industry typically dominated by men, especially one closely tied to construction. But she's found strength in teamwork and support. "We're careful about who we work with because the project experience matters the most – for both clients and our team," she said.
For aspiring designers, particularly women, Amber suggests exploring different things and learning from them. "Try out various opportunities and be open to learning! Also, don't cling to your work too tightly – some of the best designs come from challenges."
Amber's journey has been marked by milestones that have shaped her into the designer and leader she is today. Moving on from a failed business attempt, relocating to a new city, and facing the challenges of starting anew have all contributed to her growth. "Those experiences made me a better leader and person. I'm grateful for them."
