A cancer diagnosis is devastating for anyone—but when it is a child, it’s indescribable. In this episode, host Ethan Astaneh speaks with Dr. Caron Stralendorf, Division Head of Pediatric Hematology, Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplantation at BC Children’s Hospital.
Dr. Stralendorf shares her journey in medicine, from growing up in South Africa to specializing in pediatric oncology. She also discusses how far the medical field has come with respect to treating children with cancer and the groundbreaking research her team is doing at BC Children’s with genetic testing.

Dr. Strahlendorf is the Head of the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology/Bone Marrow Transplantation at BC Children’s Hospital. Originally from South Africa, Dr. Stralendorf moved to Vancouver in 1999. A graduate of the University of the Witwatersrand Medical School in Johannesburg, she has been an oncologist for over 20 years since completing pediatric and subspecialty medical training in South Africa, England and Canada.
Among her many leadership roles at BCCH, she is the site principal investigator for the North American Children’s Oncology Group clinical trials network, Director of the Pediatric Apheresis Program, and member (and prior co-chair) of the Clinical Research Ethics Board. Her contributions have been recognized by several awards including the 2013 Cancer Society Volunteer Award of Excellence, the 2013 UBC Pediatric Resident Faculty Mentor of the Year award and in 2014 she was a finalist for the YMCA Women of Distinction Award.
Ethan is a Financial Advisor in the firm’s Vancouver office. He provides strategic advice to high net worth business owners, professionals, and retirees, and offers his clients a wide range of financial services, including; retirement income planning, business succession, and continuation planning, investment management, tax and estate planning, charitable giving, and intergenerational wealth transfer.
