Host Ron Haik is joined by Arts Umbrella President and CEO Paul Larocque, Associate Artistic Director of Theatre, Music & Film Andy Toth, Arts Instructor Riba Kalb and Ben Waters, a dance student with the Arts Umbrella Post-Secondary Program.

They discuss what it means to have access to the arts and the value of an arts education. They also discuss how Arts Umbrella was able to improvise to allow students to perform and sing together safely throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, and how working in and with the arts has made an impact in all the guests lives and their communities.

Arts Umbrella is a not-for-profit Arts School where young artists ages 2–22 cultivate their creativity in Dance, Theatre, and Visual Arts. Arts Umbrella has four locations in Vancouver and Surrey, as well as donor-funded programs at schools, community centres, neighbourhood houses, and healthcare facilities across Metro Vancouver. They reach more than 24,000 students every year, with nearly 80% participating at little to no cost through their bursary program.

He is a member of Chor Leoni Men’s Choir, has participated on the boards of several arts organizations, and serves as a Mentor with the Loran Scholars Foundation. Previously, Paul held the position of Associate Director of the Vancouver Art Gallery for more than a decade.

Andy Toth

A graduate of New York’s prestigious American Musical and Dramatic Academy, Andy has been directing, coaching, teaching and performing in Vancouver for 15 years. Directing credits include The Fantasticks, Assassins, and Last Call…a Post-Nuclear Cabaret with Quintessence Musicals, West Side Story with the Chilliwack Academy of Music, and Anne of Green Gables for the Kamloops Symphony Orchestra. Andy also had the pleasure of directing the late Canadian Icon and CBC radio legend Jurgen Gothe in his hilarious wine show Up Your Glass… a wine entertainment. Local audiences know Andy from his recent tour-de-force performance as Edna in Hairspray at Theatre Under the Stars, as Brian in Avenue Q for the Arts Club, and much more.

Riba Kalb

Riba has been an art instructor for over 30 years in both Mexico and Canada. She received her BSc in Education from the University of Southern California, and a diploma in Art for Children and Creativity and Education from UAM, Mexico. She is also a Certified Expressive Arts Therapist.

Currently, Riba works at Arts Umbrella where she teaches a multitude of classes, including Parent and Me, Mixed Media, Painting and Drawing to early learners, outreach programs, an offsite program at Queen Elizabeth Annex, and Mixed Media summer camps for 6-8 years old. Riba has also held instructional workshops for teachers on how to teach art classes and develop art curriculum.

Ben Waters

Ben Waters is a student of the Arts Umbrella post-secondary dance program and the winner of the McCall McBain Cultural Leadership Award.
