About Katie

Katie started paddling when she was 10 years old and first represented Canada on the world stage at 16, where she made a strong debut at the COPAC Pan American Junior Championships in 2012, winning a gold medal in the C-1 500m event.

Since then, Katie has gone on to become a highly decorated canoe sprinter, with medals in many World Cup events and World Championships, including back-to-back World Championship gold in the C-2500m with partner Laurence Vincent Lapointe!

Canoe Kayak Canada held their national trials in March of 2021, and it was here that Katie claimed the quota spot as her own, by winning a race-off against her previous racing partner, Laurence. Showing up at the Tokyo Games, Katie has seven world titles in the C-1 200m under her belt from the past decade.

Katie will be making history when she competes in Tokyo where women’s canoeing will make its debut at the Games. This is the first year canoe/kayak becomes gender equal with six events each – four kayak and two canoe – for men and women. Katie’s first race is the C-1 200m heat on August 4th at 8:30 pm EST and 5:30 pm PST.

As a CAN Fund #150Women recipient and a female athlete, what does it mean to be supported by women?

For generations, women have been advocating for the inclusion of my sport in the Games. Without them, I wouldn’t be here. They created a future for me by fighting a hard fight. It is so special. Also, it means a lot to know the women that donated to CAN Fund #150Women support my journey and want to see Canadian female athletes succeed. It is really cool to see people coming together and celebrating sport in that way.

What are the words you live by?

Medals are earned in the winter and awarded in the summer.

What is the best part about representing Canada?

The best part about representing Canada as a canoe athlete is that I get to showcase on the world stage something I view as so Canadian. Going out in your canoe on a lake or river is such a Canadian experience for me, and I am so lucky that I get to do that every day.

The CAN Fund #150Women Mantra is BE EPIC, what does BE EPIC mean to you?

It means being you and YOU are EPIC. Rising to the occasion and pursuing your dreams.
