Standing amidst a crowd of over 400 at last month’s Vancouver Women’s LEAD event, the vibrant energy of community support was palpable. The evening was a celebration of women’s leadership and empowerment, interwoven with inspiring stories of courage and transformation. Our panelists shared their journeys to thriving careers in their chosen fields, and together, we experienced the power of uplifting one another through networks that foster empowerment and knowledge sharing.
Here are some of my key takeaways from this incredible evening:
The Power of Community Support
Women’s LEAD co-chair, Tassan Sung spoke about the heart of Women's LEAD Vancouver, which lies in a profound belief in the strength of community and support networks. These networks provide a nurturing environment where women can share experiences, knowledge, and challenges. It's within these connections that empowerment flourishes, enabling women to build their confidence and contribute meaningfully to their communities. Through mentorship and collaboration, they create a ripple effect of empowerment, inspiring others to reach for their goals.
The Red Dress Moment: Embracing Our Stories
Our opening speaker, Laquita Cleare shared with us the concept of "Red Dress Moment" which holds a special significance, symbolizing the stories often left untold with an open invitation for us to courageously share the narratives often left unspoken. Every woman carries a multitude of experiences and perspectives, yet many remain unspoken. Encouraging each other to share these narratives is transformative, fostering empathy and understanding. By committing to storytelling in our daily lives, we amplify voices, celebrate diversity, and create a union of shared experiences that enrich our collective journey.
Speaking the Language of Sculpture
Marie Khouri's journey into sculpture began as a revelation—an awakening to a language of form and expression she didn't know she possessed. As a Middle Eastern woman, Khouri draws inspiration from the graceful curves of the Arabic language, translating them into her sculptural artistry. Her story resonates deeply, reminding us all to embrace new possibilities and pursue passions, regardless of perceived limitations. The physical energy that transformed her was when she embraced what she loved and then it became her and she could disassociate what she does with who she is. Truly, it is a gift when you have the courage to embrace something you thought was too far or too different from you.
Her advice rings true: “If you feel like trying something out, do it. Give it a try.” Just do it!
Pivoting and Transformation: Embracing New Paths
Kiara Leblanc shared that the pivot between a specific concept and the realization of knowing when to let go and pivot to a different business idea is a testament to resilience and self-discovery. Many women find their true calling not in their initial pursuits but through courageous transitions. This flexibility and willingness to evolve empower women to forge paths they were meant to walk, inspiring others with their boldness and determination.
From Social Responsibility to Healing
Dr. Maryam Zeineddin’s path to medicine was guided by a deep-seated commitment to social responsibility and community health. Founding Zili CARE, a nonprofit focused on healthcare empowerment, reflects her belief that wellness is foundational to healing. As the incoming President of BC Doctors, she advocates for a healthcare system that prioritizes both patient care and the well-being of healthcare providers. Her leadership exemplifies the transformative impact of aligning professional pursuits with personal values and serves as a testament to the power of personal stories in driving meaningful change and inspiring others to pursue purpose-driven endeavours.
Personal Experience Turned Passion
Teena Gupta co-founded Nurse Next Door through a personal journey when she was on bed rest with her first son, sparking a path that illustrates how life experiences can shape impactful careers. This initiative not only addresses healthcare needs but also embodies the spirit of community care and compassion.
Embracing Collective Inspiration
These stories intersect and illustrate the transformative power of community, pivots, and shared experiences. Through storytelling and community support, women break barriers, embrace their unique journeys, and inspire transformative change. As we continue to celebrate our stories and uplift one another, we forge a path toward a future where empowerment flourishes and every voice finds its place of strength and belonging.
I loved the quote that Dr. Maryam Zeineddin shared to close out the evening:
"I do not want to be remembered as a woman who was always exhausted. I do not want to be remembered as a woman who was always stressed, always busy, always rushing, always holding herself together and pushing through. I would like to be remembered as a relaxed woman, a compassionate woman, a curious, joyful, pleasure-loving woman. A woman who works hard and rests deeply, who loves fiercely and lives peacefully. A woman who knows her worth and her power, who accepts her imperfections and her vulnerabilities, who embraces her limitations and possibilities. A woman who laughs and cries and aches and loves and is enchanted by the mess and magic and mundaneness of this beautiful, shimmering life.” - Nicola Jane Hobbs
