Some would say there is a high correlation between professional athletes and successful businesspeople. Athletes have an interesting combination of skills; they are generally disciplined, team-oriented, thrive under pressure and have a strong desire to succeed. So, it is no surprise that once these athletes leave their sport and enter the professional world, some choose to join the world of finance.
It is no different for Jeremy Salvo, who joined Nicola Wealth in 2019 as a Wealth Planning Associate after an exciting career in competitive tennis. “One of the highlights of my career was playing at the Vancouver Open, hosted at Hollyburn Country Club in West Vancouver.” Salvo shares, “There is something extra special about playing in my hometown.”
At the peak of his playing career, Jeremy competed on the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) elite, worldwide tennis tour. “Playing at a high level in tennis has given me a strong foundation to excel in my financial planning career, especially at Nicola Wealth.”
Originally from Winnipeg, Salvo’s father moved his family to Vancouver for more opportunities. “The move allowed me to represent both B.C. in numerous junior Canadian competitions and the Pacific Northwest in several U.S. national competitions,” Jeremy reflects. As a top-ranked junior, he was later awarded an athletic scholarship to a Texas university, where he graduated with his finance degree. “In hindsight, this is where my passion for finance developed,” he said, “I had a finance professor who was very instrumental in cultivating my interest, and with his mentorship, I was offered an internship with JP Morgan Chase as a Credit Analyst.” Unfortunately, he was not able to take the opportunity due to work visa issues. Still, he secured a position as a Financial Advisor at a Canadian financial security firm to get his foot in the door.
After four years as an Advisor, Jeremy was offered an amazing job opportunity at The Vancouver Lawn Tennis & Badminton Club. “As the Director of High Performance for tennis, I was constantly working on building strong, genuine coaching relationships with members, many of whom I still call friends,” Jeremy explains. As a result, he has been able to naturally translate a client-centric mindset to his role as a Wealth Planning Associate at Nicola Wealth.
While Jeremy says that proficiency with a racquet is much different from proficiency with financial planning tools, various skills he has developed throughout a rewarding tennis career, such as resilience, adaptability, and perseverance, have served him well in this position.
Jeremy has found himself in a successful and fulfilling career at Nicola Wealth. Still, he is not ready to hang up his racquet, most recently competing at the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Young Seniors 2022 Championships in Lisbon, Portugal, as part of the Canadian National Team. “I am eager to develop my career at Nicola Wealth, and tennis remains an integral part of my life and continues to contribute to the success I have in my role. It is a sport of a lifetime, and the lessons I’ve learned and the challenges I’ve faced and overcome on the court have helped me immensely off the court,” Jeremy explains, “The Wealth Planning Associate Team is a group I am very proud to represent. They constantly motivate me to perform my best.”
