There are many people and issues that require immediate attention during these times of uncertainty. Charities have adjusted the way they operate on a daily basis and many have had to make significant shifts to fulfill their particular missions. Unfortunately, many charities may not weather this storm.
Our intention with the Charity x COVID-19 series is to share updates from a spectrum of charitable organizations to garner attention and inspire support for those in need.
Charity name: Make-A-Wish BC & Yukon
Established: May 1, 1983
Core purpose and mandate: To grant life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses.
How is your organization impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic?
We have made the difficult decision to postpone the granting of wishes through April 30, 2020, as well as postpone or outright cancel events that would involve wish children, volunteers and donors’ attendance at large gatherings The situation is dynamic, and this postponement may be extended as required to ensure the safety and well-being of our Make-A-Wish Community.
How have your fundraising plans changed?
Because of COVID-19 many of our regular fundraising events that we rely on have been cancelled or are in jeopardy of being cancelled depending on how long social distancing is in effect. This includes Make-A-Wish organized events as well as events being run by external 3rd parties. Many of our corporate partners are unsure of their ability to provide their usual financial support and foundations and community grants are now being inundated by the number of charities applying for funding.
If there is one story or message you would like to share with our community, what would it be?
We are asking the community to keep the spirits up for the kids who are waiting on wishes. Join Ryan Reynolds in helping encourage wish kids waiting for their wish by sharing a message of hope. Just post your creative message of hope to any social media channel, tag Make-A-Wish, use the hashtag #WishesAreWaiting and invite 2 friends to join in! How can one support your organization most effectively?
By sharing our #WishesAreWaiting message (as per above) and through dedicated financial support that will help us get back to granting wishes as soon as it is reasonable to do so.
Can donations be transferred electronically? If so, how?
